A one-storey house, painted in yellow and surrounded by trees, the Pedro Queiroz Pereira Cultural Centre brings to mind a large family house. It is indeed a large family, joined by the employees of Supremo Secil Cimentos and the surrounding community: Adrianópolis and Ribeira, two small municipalities located in Paraná, in the south of Brazil.
The old home of the family that owned the lands where it is located (currently converted into a factory belonging to Supremo Secil Cimentos), has now been turned into an area for recreation, training and learning. Above all, it is a place that cultivates a feeling of community. It has become a remarkable example of how Semapa seeks to take care of the people and communities it belongs to.
The house received the name of Pedro Queiroz Pereira, founder of the Group, duly commemorating the years he lived in Brazil.
A social space where everyone is welcome
For years, the current Pedro Queiroz Pereira Cultural Centre was merely a location for construction material to be deposited, until the decision was made to convert it into a space open to everyone. It was inaugurated in 2019, whereby it opened its doors to a vast array of free activities related to education, culture, sports and leisure.
In an area that includes a large meeting room, a library with computers and several ample rooms, both employees and the general community can follow their routines, increase their knowledge, feel good and, above all, take care of each other. However, there are a few basic principles: all work must be carried out voluntarily, at no cost to the community, all the materials needed for the activities are provided by Supremo Secil Cimentos.
Diverse range of activities at the Pedro Queiroz Pereira Cultural Centre
Table-tennis, capoeira, yoga, handicraft and playing the guitar: these are just a few examples of the sports and leisure activities hosted at the Pedro Queiroz Pereira Cultural Centre.
But in a place which takes up the mission of educating and seeks to help create a better future for the young people of the region, projects such as “Supreme Student” take up the place of honour. Through classes taught by volunteer teachers over six months, students who are completing their compulsory education can acquire essential skills in order to pursue their studies or to duly enter the job market.
For students and schools, there is also the “Echo” project, whose purpose is to raise awareness for the value and importance of the local heritage, through speleological and archaeological activities.
For older people, the Cultural Centre serves not only as a place to socialise, but also as a place where they can learn and improve their lifestyle, participating in social activities and festivities that bring the company closer to the community.
In order to deepen and strengthen ties with the community, Supremo Secil Cimentos has also opened the factory to visitors, allowing people to discover and learn about their facilities and all their procedures. In 2022 alone, 400 people — students, customers, members of the community and relatives of employees — took part in this programme, which earned the name “Open Doors”.
All in all, considering all its social and environmental projects, Supremo Secil Cimentos saw over six thousand participations in its activities in 2022, a number that is already about to be surpassed in 2023.
