Having a positive impact is central to Semapa’s “Making it Better” purpose, and this aligns with the daily mission of Fundação da Nossa Senhora do Bom Sucesso (Our Lady of Good Success Foundation).
Founded in 1951, Fundação da Nossa Senhora do Bom Sucesso operates with a pioneering model of public health, focusing on promoting well-being and human development. It particularly stands out for its strategic emphasis on children and teenagers, laying the foundations for a healthier and more sustainable society.
Caring for the Health and Well-being of Portuguese Families
Proving its innovative approach to health and well-being, the Foundation provides healthcare services for children, youth, expectant mothers, and their families in their own context and environment. Maria do Carmo Ferin da Cunha, the nursing director of Fundação da Nossa Senhora do Bom Sucesso (FNSBS), explains that the Foundation’s work is guided by prevention principles, with health screenings as a vital tool.
In addition to treating patients when they have medical conditions, the Foundation ensures continuous health monitoring for young individuals through numerous programs conducted by various specialist physicians. These initiatives, including specialties like Hearing Health, Vision Health, and Oral Health, are interconnected and enable the health monitoring of children from their early days to adulthood.
Furthermore, FNSBS includes a nursing team available to support families over the long term. By implementing this innovative approach, each child and their family are assigned a nurse who manages and oversees their health needs, taking on the role of a gatekeeper.
Over 10 Years of Collaboration
The pioneering and innovative nature of projects implemented by Fundação Nossa Senhora do Bom Sucesso has captured the attention of the Semapa Group. Consequently, the Group has been supporting this project since 2012, helping its vital role in changing lives.
The numbers speak for themselves: annually, the Foundation conducts approximately 17,000 medical appointments, benefiting over 8,200 users. Notably, half of these beneficiaries lack the economic means to cover healthcare costs and would otherwise have no access to these services.
Part of Semapa’s support to the Foundation focuses on the social support component for underprivileged children. With this aid, it has been possible to ensure healthcare surveillance for around 160 at-risk children – those who have been removed from their families and placed in institutions – who would previously only receive hospital care in emergency situations.
Semapa believes that promoting the health of these children is caring for their future and the future of society, as clearly expressed by FNSBS’s mission: “We care for today to create a better tomorrow.” This purpose resonates with Semapa and inspires us all.
