The cement sector is one of the biggest emitters of carbon dioxide on the planet. Being an essential sector to society, it is important to work towards its decarbonisation and make it cleaner. This goal aligns with Semapa’s “Making it Better” purpose, from which an innovative solution was born to respond to the challenge: the Verdi Zero Concrete.
Launched in 2022, by Secil, it is the first concrete in Portugal with zero CO₂ emissions, meeting the goal of promoting carbon neutrality in the cement industry by 2050 and decarbonisation of the construction sector. As concrete is the most used manufactured product in the world, it is easy to foresee the positive impact that a solution like Verdi Zero Concrete will have on society and on the environment.
“With the launch of Verdi Zero Concrete, Secil takes one step forward in the construction of a more sustainable future, with lower carbon buildings and infrastructures, thus minimizing the impact on the environment”, states Otmar Hübscher, CEO of the Secil Group. He also adds that “the company follows the guidelines which have been established for the cement industry sector and is committed to reducing CO₂ emissions associated with the value chain, developing a set of projects focusing on production, operation and transport”.
A product aligned with the business
Verdi Zero Concrete incorporates recycled residues, from materials found in landfills, creating a concrete applicable to any elements or structures, whether in new construction work or in rehabilitation works. By promoting circular economy, it reduces the need to use virgin raw materials.
The remaining emissions, deriving from the use of natural resources, are compensated by a carbon offset programme certified by Climate Impact Partners, which allowed the attribution of the Carbon Neutral® Product seal. In this aspect, Secil is supporting carbon reduction initiatives in the fields of reforestation, wind energy and solar heating of water. By reducing the carbon footprint, these projects contribute to the sustainable development of the local communities.
The result is the creation of zero-emission concrete. This allows the current trends and demands of constructing sustainable buildings with environmental certifications to be met. At the same time, Verdi Zero Concrete demonstrates Semapa’s commitment to fighting climate change, while staying true to its strategic foundations: the protection of the planet and of people, combined with environmental respect and a transversally responsible citizenship.
Therefore, in line with the business’s drivers, Verdi Zero Concrete proves to be a big step towards building a greener future, with infrastructures and buildings that last longer and have less of an impact on the environment.
